چکیده

To determine the dissipation induced by the surface of fused silica fibers, we measured the quality factor of fibers having various diameters. We measured a maximum quality factor of 21 million and extrapolated to obtain an intrinsic quality factor for fused silica of 29 million. Dissipation in the surface dominated at diameters less than about 1 mm. We developed a method for characterizing surface-induced dissipation that is independent of sample geometry or mode shape. Investigations of the Dynamics and Mechanical Dissipation of a Fused Silica Suspension

(Dated: March 13, 2002) The quality factor (Q) of a violin mode of a fiber under tension is related to the Q of the unloaded fiber by the dilution factor. We calculate this dilution factor from measurements of the Q’s and compare to measurements based on the shift of the violin mode frequencies with temperature, and to theoretical predictions. We also report supporting measurements of the tempe...

Invited article: CO2 laser production of fused silica fibers for use in interferometric gravitational wave detector mirror suspensions.

In 2000 the first mirror suspensions to use a quasi-monolithic final stage were installed at the GEO600 detector site outside Hannover, pioneering the use of fused silica suspension fibers in long baseline interferometric detectors to reduce suspension thermal noise. Since that time, development of the production methods of fused silica fibers has continued. We present here a review of a novel ...

Apparatus for dimensional characterization of fused silica fibers for the suspensions of advanced gravitational wave detectors.

Detection of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources remains one of the most challenging problems faced by experimental physicists. A significant limit to the sensitivity of future long-baseline interferometric gravitational wave detectors is thermal displacement noise of the test mass mirrors and their suspensions. Suspension thermal noise results from mechanical dissipation in the fuse...

Fused silica fibers with a dumbbell-shaped diameter profile are proposed to simultaneously achieve low thermal noise and low vertical bounce frequency in an interferometric gravitational wave detector. We present a theoretical analysis of achievable noise spectra. We also survey the sources of dissipation in fused silica fibers. Finally, we apply the model to analyze the influence of welded end...

Characterisation of mechanical loss in synthetic fused silica ribbons

Synthetic fused silica fibres of rectangular cross section, known as ‘ribbon’ fibres, are currently the baseline design for the suspension elements of the lowest stage of the test mass suspensions for the planned Advanced LIGO detector. In this Letter we present the first measurements of mechanical loss factors of synthetic fused silica ribbons of a type potentially suitable for this purpose an...
